Considered counsel
for decisions that
carry weight.
The Barrington Group advises closely held companies, investors, and counsel across three connected disciplines. One senior team, engaged directly — from the first question through to resolution.
Engagements are led personally by a former chief financial officer and CPA — not handed down to a junior bench.
Where we work
- ConsultingOperating strategy, finance function, transitions
- Investment ServicesDiligence, valuation, capital and portfolio review
- Litigation SupportDamages, forensic accounting, expert consulting
The three practices are deliberately connected. A valuation question rarely stays a valuation question.
What we do
Three practices, one point of view.
Companies rarely present a problem that belongs neatly to a single discipline. An earn-out dispute is a valuation question and a litigation question. A succession plan is an operating question and a capital question. We are built to hold all three at once.
01 — Consulting
Operating clarity for companies at an inflection point.
Growth, transition, distress, a founder stepping back — the underlying questions rarely change. What is actually happening in the numbers? What has to change? In what order?
We work inside the business alongside the people who run it, and we stay long enough to see decisions through implementation rather than handing over a deck and leaving.
Most engagements begin with a number nobody can fully explain. That is usually the right place to start.
Representative work
- CFO-level support and finance function build-out
- Budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow modeling
- Margin, pricing, and cost structure analysis
- Internal controls and close-process remediation
- Ownership transition and succession planning
- Board, investor, and lender reporting packages
02 — Investment Services
Diligence that survives contact with the deal.
We evaluate opportunities the way an owner would — quality of earnings before headline multiples, structure before story. Buy-side or sell-side, the work is the same: understand what the model is smoothing over.
The deliverable is a position you can defend to a committee, a lender, or a counterparty, with the assumptions stated plainly enough to argue about.
A clean model is not the same as a clean business. The difference is where the diligence lives.
Representative work
- Quality-of-earnings and financial due diligence
- Business valuation and fairness analysis
- Capital structure and financing review
- Portfolio company performance monitoring
- Sell-side preparation and data-room readiness
- Post-close integration and 100-day planning
03 — Litigation Support
Financial analysis built to withstand cross-examination.
We are retained by counsel and by parties directly. The work is documented to be defended: every schedule traceable to a source document, every assumption stated, tested, and capable of surviving an opposing expert.
We are equally comfortable supporting a claim and dismantling one — and we will tell you early when the numbers do not support the theory of the case.
The most valuable finding is often the one that changes your client's expectations before a filing does it for them.
Representative work
- Economic damages calculation and rebuttal
- Forensic accounting and fund tracing
- Shareholder, partnership, and marital disputes
- Contract, warranty, and post-closing claims
- Discovery support and document analysis
- Expert consulting and testimony support
How we work
Senior attention, start to finish.
There is no leverage model here. The person you meet in the first conversation is the person doing the work — which keeps engagements small, focused, and accountable.
Scope
A conversation before a proposal. We want to understand the decision you are actually facing, who else is in the room, and what a good outcome looks like to you.
Diagnose
We go to source — general ledger, contracts, filings, the people who touch the numbers daily — and establish what is true before anyone builds a recommendation on top of it.
Build
Analysis, model, or report, written to be read by the person who has to act on it. Assumptions stated in plain language. Sensitivities shown, not buried in an appendix.
Stand behind it
We remain available through implementation, negotiation, or proceedings. Work that cannot be defended six months later was not worth delivering.
About the firm
A small firm, on purpose.
The Barrington Group was formed around a straightforward observation: the analysis that matters most in a company’s hardest moments is usually done by whoever is most junior on the engagement.
We are structured to make that impossible. Engagements are led personally by a former chief financial officer and certified public accountant, with decades spent inside operating companies rather than only advising them — closing books, defending numbers to boards and lenders, and living with the consequences of the recommendation.
Who we work with
Closely held and family-owned companies, private investors and independent sponsors, litigation counsel, fiduciaries, and boards navigating a decision they only get to make once.
What you can expect
- Independence
- We take no commissions, no referral fees, and no positions that would compromise a conclusion. The only thing we sell is our judgment.
- Candor
- You will hear the unwelcome version early. A client who is surprised late is a client we failed at the outset.
- Discretion
- Much of our work touches disputes, transitions, and matters that are not public. It stays that way — during the engagement and after it.
- Restraint
- We decline work that falls outside what we do well, and we say when a problem needs a lawyer, a banker, or nobody at all.
